As you are are going to design a website and you are familiar with your CMS may be it is WordPress or Joomla, and you have also created the local development environment with XAMPP and MySQL with Apache Web Server. Now you need a beautiful website or theme. So create any number of folders inside the 'xampp htdocs ' each folder thus forming a website (as you build it). Sometimes apache won't even start. This is due to the clashing of ports with some applications.
If you are a WordPress plugin or WordPress theme developer, or provide professional WordPress support from time to time you need to run multiple WordPress websites on the same XAMPP installation on Windows. Multiple websites running on the same Apache web server are called Virtual Hosts. In this easy to follow tutorial we explain how to setup multiple virtual hosts on XAMPP so you can run multiple WordPress websites on the same XAMPP installation.
Configure Virtual Hosts in XAMPP
- To add virtual hosts in XAMPP, or in other words, to configure multiple websites on XAMPP, open the Virtual Hosts Apache configuration file httpd-vhosts.conf from C:xamppapacheconfextra
- Uncomment the below line to enable name based virtual hosts on your XAMPP.
- At the end of the file add the following 4 lines. These 4 lines are used to allow access to the XAMPP configuration pages (to access phpMyAdmin etc) by using the URL http://localhost
The XAMPP welcome page To have Apache serve your own web site content there are two main options. The first is to place it within the default DocumentRoot. The second is to place it outside of the default DocumentRoot and use the Alias directive to map a URL to this location.
- For each other virtual host (website) you would like to configure on the XAMPP Apache web server, add the below code (using www.wpwhitesecurity.com as example).
- By adding the above directives to httpd-vhosts.conf (XAMPP virtual hosts configuration file), the Apache web server running on XAMPP knows that:
- The website files can be found in c:xampphtdocswppro (line 2)
- This website should respond to www.wpwhitesecurity.com (line 3)
- Allow everyone to access the content of the directory (line 4 to 7)
- To test and confirm that all the syntax in the Apache configuration is correct, run the httpd.exe process with the –t switch from the c:xamppapachebin directory as seen in the below screenshot.
Configure the Windows Hosts File
Use the Windows Hosts file to redirect the traffic from your computer to the local installation of XAMPP rather than to the original website. E.g. while testing new WordPress changes for our website WP White Security.com, I add an entry in the Windows Hosts file to redirect requests from my browser to the local intallation of XAMPP. Configuration example: Running multiple websites on XAMPP
If you would like to add more than one virtual host (website) to XAMPP, simple add more VirtualHost directives to the same file. In my testing environment I have the following websites set up:
- www.WP White Security.com from c:xampphtdocswppro
- www.wphandymen.com from c:xampphtdocswphandy
To have both websites and the XAMPP configuration pages (localhost) running on my XAMPP installation, I have the following in the XAMPP virtual hosts configuration file (httpd-vhosts.conf).

Suppose the environment is:
- WIFI network – mobile hotspot
- PC as localhost – XAMPP server is installed. You can refer to my last tutorial for installed XAMPP:
Step 1: Open the Download the XAMPP Installer:
- First of all, I assume that you have tested your website completely on desktop and working fine using XAMPP server in localhost.
- On the XAMPP papel, click the bar Config and bar go to XAMPP -> Apache-> httpd-xampp.conf and edit the file or C:xampp_newapacheconfextrahttpd-xampp.conf.
- You can opened it by editor like Sublime Text 3.
- In the file find the text 'Require localhost' and replace it with 'Require all granted'. Now save and close the file.
- Restart XAMPP Server by click stop and click start again.
Step 2: Create inbound and outbound in Windows firewall
- Open control panel and search windows firewall in upper right corner search box. Now open windows firewall from search results. On the next screen click on Advanced settings in the left sidebar links.
- In Windows firewall screen, Click on Inbound rule. As per below image click on New Rule which is located in right sidebar. It will pop up new screen to configure the inbound port.
- In the configuration wizard, Select Port as per above image in Rules type page and click next.
- Now Select Port type as TCP and specify port on which your Apache server is running and click next button. In my case it is 80 so i have provided 80.
- Select 'Allow the connection' action as per below image and go ahead with next screen.
- Now provide name of Rule and description and finish the configuration wizard.
- Now Inbound rule is created in windows firewall and using same steps you can go ahead
Step 3: Check the localhost IP by type ipconfig
- Open the cmd and run as administrator.
- Type the: ipconfig
Step 4: Test the connection on PC and Mobile app of the IP

- Open any browser and type the IP : Example: 192.168.43.41
- The result will be shown as below.
